It’s always exciting to use a fantasy in the kitchen. Especially when you have kids and they are becoming picky eaters. Any ordinary dish can be turned into something interesting or you can tell a story with food to make them eat.
For example, I turned a regular sandwich into snails that were lost in a jungle of salat leaves. They are sad and we need to help them find a way to our tummy…
These snail sandwiches can be a great option for a daily snack, or a party appetizer, or an idea for a school lunch box. Made with a whole wheat tortilla, an egg omelet, cheese, salad leaves, smoky ham and delicious layer of honey and cream cheese spread will be successful both with children and adults.
Ingredients for sandwiches:
1 whole wheat flour tortilla (11-inches)
2 beaten eggs
¼ cup shredded cheese (of your choice)
1 tomato
4 slices smoky ham
2 salad leaves
1 teaspoon butter
Ingredients for a spread:
3 tablespoons cream cheese
1 teaspoon honey
½ teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon lemon juice
¼ teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
Step 1
On a heated frying pan with butter pour the beaten eggs, close the frying pan with a lid and cook eggs for a minute. Then use a spatula to flip the omelet, spread the shredded cheese, close the lid of the pan and turn of the flame.
Leave for a couple of minutes or until the cheese is melted. Transfer the omelet to a plate and let it cool.
Step 2
In a small bowl mix together all the ingredients for the spread and set aside.
Step 3
Slice the tomato as thin as possible, wash and wipe the salad leaves and prepare the ham.
Step 4
Put the tortilla on the work surface and spread the honey and cream cheese spread.
Transfer the omelet to the tortilla.
Lay the ham on 2/3 of the tortilla.
Over the ham lay the sliced tomato.
Over the tomato lay the salad leaves.
Step 5
Very carefully roll the tortilla starting with the side with all the ingredients. Try to do it tide as possible.
Step 6
Wrap up the rolled tortilla in plastic and chill in a refrigerator for at least two hours.
Step 7
Cut the rolled tortilla into 1-inch sandwiches and serve to the table.
Notes:
To make snail eyes you will need toothpicks, medium pitted black olive and cream cheese. Cut the olive into three pieces and use the part with small hole. Stuff the hole with the cream cheese and very genteelly pierce the olive with the toothpick. Spear the toothpick with the olive into the sandwich.
You can experiment with diverse types of cheeses or meats to get new delicious tastes.
These sandwiches can be refrigerated overnight and be cut the next day.
